Director Karan Johar turned 43 on Monday. Is it just us or is he getting cooler with age?
Possibly because the King Of Bolly-Schmaltz himself, we've discovered over the years, appears to be a really likable guy. With 'Koffee With Karan', which has been on since 2004, we've found out that he is an exceptionally good television host with a deliciously bitchy sense of humour. His video interviews show that he is more articulate and interesting than most actors in the industry (seriously, have you ever watched a Hrithik Roshan interview? It's like watching paint dry.)
Over the past year, he's broken new ground in his collaborations with comedy collective All India Bakchod, contributing to a style of humour that is more daring, more irreverent — a rarity in an industry that is all-too-careful when it comes to image management. Aside from playing an exaggerated version of himself in an Alia Bhatt parody video, Johar was one of the best things about the controversial AIB Knockout, of which he was Roastmaster. Hell, he was one of the only good things about the recent 'Bombay Velvet', in which he made his mainstream acting debut as the villainous Kaizad Khambatta.
But when it comes to his films, Johar has, so far, done exactly what his audience has expected him to do (barring, perhaps, 'My Name Is Khan', which is a film nobody should ever talk about). And more often than not, this "NRI Emotion Exploiter" has been very good at doing what he is expected to do.
